What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Partial or complete removable dentures need pastes and adhesives to stay put in your mouth, but implant-supported dentures are anchored with metal posts in your jaw so they are stable and fit securely. This means that the implant dentures will not slip or move, even when you are eating or speaking. With more security and support, patients with implant dentures can rest assured that their dentures will remain in their mouths. Implanted dentures look great and can be treated just like your natural teeth. At Benjamin Lievense, DDS PLLC, Saginaw, MI patients can have custom implant dentures that feel comfortable and look natural. Schedule a consultation to learn more about implant-supported dentures and to see if they are right for you.
What Should I Expect with Implant-Supported Dentures?
Before treatment, we will perform a thorough dental exam with digital imaging to assess the strength of your gums and jawbone. If the jawbone or gums are too weak to hold the implanted posts, a gum and/or bone graft may be needed. Once the grafted area is fully healed, the implants can be placed. You will be given local anesthesia to numb your mouth before the procedure. Other sedation options may be considered if the process is extensive or you need it to feel comfortable. Surgical incisions will be made in your gums so implants can be inserted in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, at least four implants are used for each arch. The incisions will be sutured with the upper portion of the post showing above the gumline. The posts will be covered with a temporary denture as your mouth heals in the next 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jaw. As soon as the dental implants are secure, your custom dentures can be connected to the implants and adjusted for a secure fit.
